What You Get With Ornamental Iron & Aluminum From Spacemakers

Ornamental fencing is a welded or extruded picket system finished with powder coat. It marks a boundary and secures a yard while keeping mountain and valley views wide open — the reason it shows up on so many benchland lots.

Pool enclosures are a common use because ornamental panels can be configured to meet barrier code with self-closing, self-latching gates. Flat-top, spear-top, and arched styles all pair well with brick and stone elevations.

Iron vs. Aluminum — Which One You Actually Want

Welded steel iron is heavier, stronger, and fully customizable — the right pick for estate gates, tall security fencing, and one-off designs. The tradeoff is rust: any scratch that reaches bare steel will eventually need touch-up paint, and sprinkler spray accelerates it.

Extruded aluminum will not rust at all, weighs a fraction as much, and comes powder-coated from the factory. For pool enclosures, front-yard fencing, and anything getting hit by irrigation, aluminum is usually the better long-term buy. Most residential 'wrought iron look' fencing installed in Utah today is aluminum.

Pool Code and Utah Barrier Requirements

Pool barriers are the one place where fence choices are regulated rather than preferences. Utah jurisdictions generally follow the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code: a minimum barrier height, a maximum gap under the fence, picket spacing narrow enough that a small child cannot pass through, and no horizontal rails positioned as a climbing ladder on the outside.

Gates have their own rules — self-closing, self-latching, opening away from the pool, with the latch mounted high enough to be out of reach. We configure panels and gates to meet the barrier requirements your city enforces, and we confirm the specifics with your building department before ordering rather than after.

    Styles, Grades, and Finishes

Flat-top reads clean and contemporary. Spear-top adds a traditional look and makes the fence meaningfully harder to climb. Arched and staggered-spear panels dress up an entry, and pressed-point or rings-and-scrolls detail is where custom iron earns its price.

Aluminum comes in grades — residential, commercial, and industrial — that differ in picket thickness and rail size. Residential grade is fine for a decorative yard boundary; anything protecting equipment, a pool, or a commercial frontage should step up a grade.

Powder coating is baked on, not sprayed like paint, so it resists chipping and holds color under high-altitude UV. Black is the default, bronze and dark gray are common on newer homes, and custom colors are available on most lines.

    Racking, Slopes, and Gates

Racking is the reason ornamental works so well on Wasatch Front lots. Quality panels pivot at each picket so the fence follows grade in one continuous line instead of stair-stepping with triangular gaps underneath — which also matters for pool code.

Driveway and estate gates are their own project: post size, hinge selection, and whether the gate swings or slides all depend on the width and slope of the opening. We upsize gate posts and set them deeper so a wide gate stays square instead of dropping at the latch after a season.

    What's Included

    • Flat-top, spear-top, and arched panel styles
    • Pool-code compliant fencing and self-latching gates
    • Estate and driveway gates in matching panels
    • Powder-coated black, bronze, and custom colors

    How the Install Works

    1. 1

      Panel layout on grade

Panels are racked or stepped to follow your slope so gaps stay within code.

    2. 2

      Posts set and cured

Posts are set in concrete, plumbed, and given time before panels are attached.

    3. 3

      Panels and gate hardware

Sections are mounted level, then gates get hinges, latches, and hardware set to swing true.
