Two vinyl fences can look identical on install day and behave completely differently after three Utah winters. The difference is wall thickness and internal reinforcement.
Thin-wall panels sag between posts, go brittle at altitude under UV, and crack when a snowblower throws ice at them. Heavier-wall extrusions with reinforced bottom rails hold a straight line for decades. Ask any bidder for the wall thickness in writing.
Posts, depth, and Utah frost
Along the Wasatch Front, frost depth means posts need to go deep and get set properly in concrete, with the right post size for the panel height. Shallow posts are the single most common reason a vinyl fence leans within a few years.
On our installs, post size, depth, and concrete are all specified on the estimate rather than left to assumption.
What raises a vinyl quote
Beyond footage, these are the items that change the number most.
- Height: 6' privacy versus 4' semi-privacy or picket
- Style: solid privacy, lattice-top, picket, ranch rail, or woodgrain-finish panels
- Color: white is standard; tan, gray, and woodgrain finishes cost more
- Gates: every gate needs heavier posts and real hardware
- Slope: stepped panels or custom-cut racking add labor
- Tear-out: removing an old wood fence and its footings
Where vinyl saves money later
There is no staining, no sealing, no rotted board replacement, and no annual maintenance beyond hosing it off. Over a 20-plus year horizon that gap usually more than closes the difference against cedar.

How long does a vinyl fence last in Utah?
A properly built vinyl fence with heavy-wall panels and correctly set posts commonly lasts well past twenty years here. UV exposure at altitude is the main stressor, which is why extrusion quality matters.
Does vinyl crack in Utah winters?
Quality vinyl handles cold fine. Cracking is almost always a thin-wall product problem, or impact damage from equipment, not a climate problem.
Can vinyl fence follow a sloped yard?
Yes — panels are either stepped down the grade or racked to follow it. Which one we use depends on the slope angle and the look you want, and we walk that with you on site.
